Finding Trail Descriptions

So as not to repeat myself excessively, I am reducing the amount of description of trails that have already been posted. Please use the search function ( upper left) to find older posts which have more detailed trail descriptions and pictures. You can also use this to find specific hikes either by trail or mountain.

3/16/10 Sargent Mountain

Bright sunny day with temperatures in the 40's. We started from the Norumbega parking area on Route 3 on The Hadlock Brook Trail (almost clear of snow and ice) and took that to the Maple Spring Trail which we usually do coming down rather than going up the mountain. This trail is beautiful but has lots of exposed roots and is rocky with some tricky spots to maneuver. There was still a fair amount of snow and ice but not as bad as on our last hike.

Kelley soon found water to get into

As we gained elevation the snow became deeper. This was somewhat surprising in light of the above freezing weather we have been having.

We left the Maple Spring Trail for the Grandgent to finish the climb to the summit. This steep trail starts out in woods and had a fair amount of snow and ice but he near the top becomes open with nice views.

From Sargent summit we started down the S. Ridge Trail to the Hadlock Brook trail which we had not used as a descent from Sargent.

This is the view as you start down the Hadlock Brook Trail toward the wooded section.

This trail was quite steep at the beginning but then more gradual and with better footing than Maple Spring.

We followed Hadlock Brook until we reached the Hadlock Pond Trail which Kelley wanted to take and so we did a short section before returning on the carriage road to Hadlock Brook and back to our car. 3 3/4 hours
