7/21/11 Ship Harbor - Wonderland Area

Prediction was for highs in the 90's with high humidity so we headed for the ocean. We took the Ship Harbor Trail to the ocean and then followed the shore to Wonderland and beyond that, again following the shore (there is not a trail) . This was a fairly leisurely exploration and the temperatures were much cooler than at home due to breezes coming off the water.

At some points the shore rocks were large and difficult for Kelley so we would do a little bushwhacking further inshore and then return to the shore. Mostly this was dry scrub but we came upon this little area of lush grass and large vegetation that seemed out of place and a little magical.

Someone had obviously arranged these stones but we liked them

Near where we turned back.

We returned to the Wonderland Trail and took that to the road and the road back to where we had parked. A very enjoyable outing. 2 3/4 hours

  1. Looks like low tide. Glad you enjoyed cooler breezes there. Hotter than ---- where I am.

  2. Looks like a great trek.Definitely will be on my hit list for the fall..It's nice to see that you don't feel the need to keep Kelley on leash..do you find that other hikers you've encountered get PO'd with a free running dog?

  3. Park rules are that dogs be leashed and when there are people around I mostly do. The shore exploration was off trail and there was a good chance we wouldn't see anyone. Kelley is such a friendly dog that we very rarely get a negative response. The area around Little Long Pond is private property and park rules don't apply so lots of folks take their dogs there off leash. We hike the park year round and it's fairly easy to hike without seeing anyone during the non tourist season.
