Finding Trail Descriptions

So as not to repeat myself excessively, I am reducing the amount of description of trails that have already been posted. Please use the search function ( upper left) to find older posts which have more detailed trail descriptions and pictures. You can also use this to find specific hikes either by trail or mountain.

9/19/13 Down East Sunrise Trail

Another beautiful day but winter is coming. Time to start scouting trails for winter use when the mountain trails are icy and dangerous. This is another of the old rail beds turned into trail- relatively recently. It is 85 miles long and we have not done any of it.  We decided to try the section from Franklin Crossing. We found access but parking was difficult. We found a spot where we could just get off the road without being in the ditch but there were few places you could do this.

The part we started on looked more road like than trail and obviously has had a lot of ATV use though we met only a few today.

The weeds look like winter is coming

I think this is a Woolly Bear which is supposed to predict winter weather

We soon crossed a stream which gave Kelley water time.

There are side trails- mostly old woods roads - and we explored some of them. The first just took us to a power line easement but the second was a nice woods walk and took us first by a small pond and then we came out of the woods to a beautiful large pond- nice surprise. Made Kelley really happy.

We walked  back to the main trail and followed it for awhile before turning back. We followed one other side trail hoping for another surprise. We found a small stream, lots of wet and muddy trail, and a few wildflowers

When we were almost back we passed  near a house and I spotted this toy truck perched on the roof of a shed.

An interesting outing. This small section of the main  trail was not especially interesting but there are more side trails to explore and many miles of unexplored main trail. Will probably be good walking in winter after snowmobiles pack down the snow. 3  1/2 hours

  1. Lovely views by the lake. What's with the no parking? That is a frequent problem around here - nice trails but no place to park.

  2. Thank Kim - There are places along the trail with parking- I guess they can't provide parking at every place a road crosses the trail.
